Wildcats 2007 Season

2007 Wildcat Track Outstanding Athletes

Wildcat Track Starts Honored

West Asley High School — May 10, 2007

At the 2007 Wildcats Track & Field Banquet, the head coaches presented varsity letters and team awards to deserving athletes while sharing insights into next year’s expectations. For the girls, Coach Robert Williams presented German exchange student Kerstin Hornung with the Outstanding Distance Runner Award for having set new WAHS school records in the 3200 meter run and the 1 Mile run while scoring 78.5 points (4th best season total). Williams also presented junior star Nodia Robinson with the Oustanding Middle Distance Award for her fourth place state finish and her second consecutive year as a SC All-State honoree. Nodia totaled 98.5 points (second best) and holds the school records in the 800, the 4×800, and the 4×400. Earning the team’s top award as the Most Valuable Athlete was sophomore Jessie Gallagher who led all scorers with an impressive 160.5 points and qualified for the round of 32 in all four of her events. Coach Williams points out that Jessie is a rare athlete who could excel in a vast array of events on the track and in the field. Though restricted by a state maximum of 4 events, Gallagher holds the school records in the high jump and the shuttle hurdle relay, and runs the 100 meter hurdles, the 400 meter hurdles, the 200, the 400 and 800 at or near elite speeds, and she’s just a sophomore. Coach Williams also made honorable mention of freshman Sprinter Morgan Blake (fifth in scoring) and sophomore sprinter Breanna Grant (3 event qualifier) and also junior hurdler/runner Amber Caparas. Amber was third in scoring and qualified in all four events but missed state for the first time in three years. Williams pointed out that Amber holds school records in the 400 hurdles, the 300 hurdles, the 4×800, 4×400, and the shuttle hurdle relay, and implied he expects a big bounce-back year from Amber in 2008 now that she’s transferring to West Ashley from the School of the Arts to devote more time to the sport in her senior year.

For the boys, Coach Richard Luden praised his young team for a very productive rebuilding year that had more than its share of highlights. In addition to 22 varsity letters to a vast majority of underclassmen, Coach Luden gave awards to the team’s Most Valuable Track Athlete and Most Valuable Field Athlete. On the track the top honor went to sophomore sprinter Dana Brown who lead all boys with 117 points and medaled in nearly every major meet of the season including our own Sandlapper Classic, the meet that proved to showcase eventual state champions in each event. Dana took third in the 200 at the Sandlapper, and runs at or near elite speeds in every sprint and sprint relay. Winning the team’s top honor in the field was senior pole vaulter, school record holder Matt Hill, who was second in team scoring, was the sole Wildcat to earn All-Region honors, and finished eleventh in the state. Coach Luden also made honorable mention of junior sprinter Rashaad Mack for finishing third in team scoring while reaching elite status in the long jump; sophomore hurdler/runner James Meggett for finishing fourth in team scoring and showing great potential for a break out year in 2008; juniors Zach Brown, Donovan Pinckney, Deshawn Mazyck, and J.J. Jones for finishing fifth through eighth respectively; and freshman pole vaulter David Melton whose personal best is just 12 inches behind Hill’s record mark. Also drawing high praise was volunteer pole vault coach Will Kuenzel who Luden congratulated for having built the deepest and strongest squad within the boys track team. In Summation all expect much greater things in 2008, especially as the student body turns out in even greater numbers to go for the gold and take part in the proud legacy of Wildcat track.

Robinson takes 4th at State in the 800 meter run

Columbia, SC — May 4, 2007

Track and Field can be the loneliest of team sports, especially when you’re the last member of your team left standing at the State Championships. On a wet dreary day, Nodia Robinson finished a respectable fourth in the AAAA 800 meter championship race, which was won by Ridgeview’s Sierra Henderson with an outstanding time of 2:15.43. When Robinson finished 2nd in 2006 to State Record holder Jessica Nichols, her new WAHS record time of 2:15.68 gave plenty of reason for all to assume the sophomore would shave at least a second off that time on route to winning this year’s crown. But Nodia’s season’s best time of 2:18:19 was well behind that mark, and her competition certainly came prepared to keep the pre-season favorite from gaining an early lead. Of the eight runners in the championship race, four were from the Wildcat’s region 8 (two from Summerville and one from Beaufort), so Nodia had more than her share of familiar foes. Most notable among these was Summerville’s Aisha-Maree Frazier, who stepped to the start line having already won two SC State Championship gold medals at the meet, as she anchored the winning 4×800 relay team the prior night and also won the 400 meter hurdles championship with one of the best times in the nation (1:01.75). In the race, Robinson was out-jockeyed at the first turn, and was forced to start in the rear of the pack while Frazier and Henderson jumped to the early lead. With 300 meters to go, Nodia made her move, passing Frazier and all but eventual winner Henderson and silver medalist Humphries from Irmo. But as she approached the final 20 meters of the race Frazier mounted an heroic effort to snatch the bronze medal from Nodia’s grasp. In a finish where it appeared Robinson successfully fended off her region nemesis, the official video replay proved Frazier crossed the finish line two hundredths of a second before Robinson, leaving many to wonder what we did before the days of the instant replay or the digital stopwatch. The dramatic finish gave Frazier a bronze medal to go with her two gold medals and one silver (4×400 relay), proving her to be the most prolific runner in the state AAAA this year. Sadly however, Frazier’s heroism didn’t translate over to the rest of her Greenwave team, as the highly favored Summerville girls lost the team State Championship to the girls from Spartanburg High by a mere two points.

In a rebuilding season, the Wildcats certainly had their share of highs and lows, but in the balance it’s clear that the team will enter the 2008 season on a high note with equally high expectations. Both the boys’ and girls’ were rich in elite-performing underclassmen this year, and the girls will enjoy numerous veterans among a group that will be rich in senior leadership. In next week’s issue, we’ll review the 2007 season, announce team awards, and take a quick glimpse at 2008.

All-State Robinson Ready to Take State Crown in the 800 meter run

Columbia, SC — April 27, 2007

At last year’s State Championships, Nodia Robinson finished a close 2nd to State Record holder Jessica Nichols who now runs for the elite Carolina Gamecocks. As they headed down the home stretch in that fateful race, Robinson showed a kick that she had never exhibited before, and Nichols responded with a dizzying do-or-die finish that left her crumpled on the sideline crying tears of joy. Robinson simply shook her hand, and casually walked off with a smile as if she had finally demystified the secret to Nichols dominance throughout her stellar career – stay in the lead, and reach down deep for your best kick in the biggest race. Just a sophomore in 2006, Robinson instantly became the sport’s new star in one of its marquee events, and despite modest performance throughout the 2007 season, she has maintained her status as the event’s girl to beat. At Saturday’s State qualifying meet, Robinson produced the 2nd best time overall in a race where she seemed to ease up on the homestretch while watching Ridgeview’s Sierra Henderson edge her out by less than 4 tenths of a second. Nodia’s time Saturday was still 4 seconds behind that posted in last year’s Championship race, but it’s nearly exactly the time she ran in the ’06 qualifier, so the stars seem to be lining up nicely for the Wildcat’s top athlete. “Now I just need to find that kick,” said Robinson as she casually stepped off the track after the race. Hardly out of breath, Nodia seemed to have enough gas in the tank to run another lap or two, and was more that just a little surprised at how hard Henderson worked to edge her at the line despite knowing she had already qualified for the big dance. “I didn’t even know she was there. I looked back twice to see who she was, and that was a mistake I won’t make again,” said Robinson, realizing that you can’t look back and kick home at the same time. What Nodia may have forgotten is that runners around the state would consider it a high honor to beat her to the concession stand, let alone an official race with thousands watching. Still just a Junior, next week’s State race may not be Robinson’s defining moment, but it is surely her only chance this year to break Nichols all-time state record in the event and set the stage to be the state’s top College prospect in 2008. Also a member of the National Honor Society, all are confident Nodia is destined for great things at the College level. As for the other Wildcat stars, following an historic year that produced 10 State finalists in ’06, this year’s qualifying meet was a huge disappointment. Jumper/hurdler/sprinter Jessie Gallagher, the team’s top scorer, entered knowing that she needed personal best performances to advance as a sophomore, but fell short in all but the 4×800 where her elite split wasn’t enough to help the team finish in the top eight (they finished 11th overall). Jessie is clearly the star of the future for the Wildcats, so it’s hard to see anything but positives from her breakout season. More disappointing was the season turned in by junior hurdler Amber Caparas, who failed to make state for the first time in her three year career, and saw her season scoring go from a team high of 170 in ‘06 to just 80 this year. Caparas is actually a theater major on loan from the School of the Arts (SOA) where they don’t exactly encourage her track career at West Ashley. “I’ve learned a lot about myself,” said Caparas. “This was the first year I was unable to check out of SOA early enough to practice with the team, and being forced to train by myself took a bigger toll than I could have imagined.” When asked if she would consider transferring to West Ashley for her senior year Amber answered, “That’s been my angst for three years now. I love SOA and my career path is in the arts, but I’m a Wildcat and my teammates deserve better from me, so you can be sure I’ll be praying about it.” For the boys, senior pole vaulter Matt Hill saw his record setting season end Saturday with an 11th place finish, which is hardly a disappointing end for a second year vaulter with a college career ahead of him. Juniors Lauren Bass and Breanna Grant also fell short in their races, and join Gallagher and Caparas as Robinson’s top cheerleader’s as she goes for the Gold as the Wildcat’s sole representative at State this Saturday. Let’s all cheer her on!

6 Wildcats score big at the Region 8AAAA Championships to Advance to State Qualifyer

Charleston, SC — April 18, 2007

When the eight regions that comprise class AAAA were re-aligned late last year, all Wildcat athletic programs were moved from region 7 to region 8, and few West Ashley sports teams were more adversely affected than the track and field program. Region 7 was good to the Wildcats, as Coach Robert Williams’ girls team was in contention to win the region or at least finish 2nd, while our boys would have easily advanced from the region in numerous events. Likewise, five of the girls on this year’s team earned all-region status in 2006. But this year not even one gained the accolade, as the shadow of the state’s #1 ranked girls’ team from Summerville reaches well beyond county lines. Nonetheless, all five of our former region 7 stars advanced, and now that they’re in the round of 32 (top four performers from each of the 8 regions), their ability to compete with the top ranked Greenwave girls bodes well for their chances to finish in the elite eight and advance to State. Both the girls 4×800 relay squad (Robinson, Caparas, Bass, Gallagher) and the 4×400 squad (Robinson, Caparas, Grant, Gallagher) advanced with Elite times, and hopes are high that both could advance. Junior Amber Caparas (400 hurdles, 100 hurdles) and sophomore Jessie Gallagher (high jump, 100 hurdles) both advanced in all four of their events, while junior runner Nodia Robinson (800 meter run) advanced in all three of hers. The 2006 All-State designee finished second at State last year, and is well in reach of winning the crown this year despite her current seventh place ranking. Her school record time of 2:15.68 from ’06 would still rank her number 1 this year, so hopes are well founded. Likewise, Caparas finished seventh at State in ’06, but she’ll need to quickly get back her stride if she hopes for her third straight trip to State. Caparas has yet to come within 5 seconds of her school record time of 1:06.84, a time that would rank her fourth in the state this year. Also enjoying a repeat visit to the extended season is junior Lauren Bass, who also tasted State in ’06 with the 4×800 relay team that shattered the school record while finishing seventh. Meanwhile, sophomore sprinter Breanna Grant had a break-out day at Region, qualifying in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Being the newest addition to the 4×400 relay, Grant has three chances to advance to State in her first year with the team.

For Coach Richard Luden’s men in black, star pole vaulter Matt Hill continued to dominate all comers by winning the Region, thus becoming the only Wildcat in ’07 to earn All-Region honors. Hill is currently ranked seventh (with five other men) so hopes are high that he will make it to State in this his Senior year. If not for the re-alignment of the regions, at least four of the boys would have advanced, and a couple would have faired well in their bid for a spot in the elite eight. But black turned out to be an appropriate color for the rest of the boy’s team, as many came close, but none advanced against the tremendous talent faced in region 8, where the top four finishers may also be among the elite eight at State – a rare occurrence indeed. Chock it up to the bad luck of the draw. On the bright side, all of the team’s top scorers this season (aside from Hill) will be returning for at least one more season, so we can expect to do a better job of filling the bus to Columbia in ’08.

Hornung Breaks Girl’s 1 Mile record

Columbia, SC — April 14, 2007

At this weekend’s Taco Bell Classic, the state’s largest national invitational meet, German exchange student Kerstin Hornung made sure that once she returns home to Germany she would not soon be forgotten by etching her name into the record books with the new record in the 1 mile run. The mile is a rare event for South Carolina schools, but Hornung certainly made the most of her only opportunity of the year by breaking Cicily Hunt’s four year old record by almost 5 full seconds with a time of 6:04.89. Cicily still holds school records in the 1600, the 1500, the 3200, and the 5000 meter runs, and is by far the greatest distance runner in school history, so Kerstin’s effort was no minor accomplishment. In an overall lackluster day, Jessie Gallagher was the team’s highest finisher with a 9th place finish in the high jump and a 16th place finish in the 100m finals, both exceptional accomplshments for a Sophomore at a national event. Both Wildcat Squads take 2nd at the
Charleston County Championships

Charleston, SC — April 11 & 12, 2007

Matt Hill Smashes Record, Jessie Gallagher Dominates, both go Elite

At last week’s Charleston County Track & Field Championships both the girls’ and the boys’ squads finished second in the eight school meet, while the Wando girls and boys both finished first in team scoring. The James Island girls team tied with the lady Wildcats for second place, and their boys’ team finished a distant third behind the Wildcats.

For the girls, Sophomore Jessie Gallagher had the biggest day of her young career, and became the fist Wildcat girl in three years to score 30 points in one meet. Gallagher won the gold in both the 100 meter hurdles and the high jump, the silver in the 400 meter dash and shared a gold in the 4×400 relay for a total of 30.5 points. Equally impressive was her time of 16.20 in the 100 meter hurdles, her first Elite performance in the event and a time that ranks her ninth in the state class AAAA. The Elite performance designation is given for marks that generally identify the athletes that can compete at the highest level in a given state, and are therefore terrific leading indicators of an athlete’s potential to make it to the State Championships. The fact that Gallagher has now achieved Elite ranking in all four of her primary events (hurdles, high jump, and both long relays), is a truly remarkable accomplishment for a Sophomore. Junior star Nodia Robinson registered another Elite time while winning the gold in the 800 meters, and as the team’s strongest runner she again carried both long relay squads to Elite times on her way to scoring 14.5 points. Though still considered a favorite to win the State crown, Robinson is currently ranked sixth in the state AAAA. Also medaling and scoring strong were Junior Amber Caparas (16.5), Senior Aja Peterson (12.5), Sophomore Breanna Grant (12), Freshman Morghan Blake (11.5), and Junior Kerstin Hornung (11).

For the boys, Senior Matt Hill won the Gold medal and beat his previous school record in the pole vault by a whopping 11 inches, posting the first Elite performance of his career with an impressive vault of 13 feet 6 inches. With one huge effort Hill went from relative anonymity and a state ranking somewhere in the 20’s to a tie for the 5th place ranking in the quest for the AAAA State Championship. Also medaling and scoring well for the boys were Sophomore speedster Dana Brown, (17.75), and Junior Rashaad Mack (13.25), both of whom earned a gold medal in the 4×100 relay along with Kadeem Bartley and Deshawn Mazyck, and Junior thrower Donovan Pinckney who won the bronze in both the discus and the shot put for a personal best total of 12 points.

With the Region 8AAAA Championships this Wednesday at Wildcat Stadium, the hometown Wildcats have finally reached the “do or die” homestretch to the State Championships in May. Only the top four finishers from each event move on the State Qualifying meet, and the season ends for those who don’t. The meet starts at 2PM, and is the last meet West Ashley will host this season.

Dana Brown leads Boys’ Sprinters to
Gold medal day

Charleston, SC — March 31, 2007

With the 2007 season heading for the home stretch, Coach Richard Luden’s men in black made a loud statement at Saturday’s Father Kelly Classic (Bishop England High School) by producing stand-out performances in several key events. Most notable among these was their gold medal victory in the 4×100 relay. The trio of Kadeem Bartley, Rashaad Mack and Deshawn Mazyck kept pace with the field all the way to the anchor leg where team leader Dana Brown took the baton trailing by at least 5 meters and exploded for a photo finish victory, earning himself and his three teammates their first gold medal of the season. The bold statement couldn’t have come at a better time, as the Region 8AAAA Championships are just two weeks away, and the two teams caught at the line, Summerville and Fort Dorchester, are the Wildcats’ top foes in the new region. Still just a sophomore, Brown again established himself as the area’s fastest underclassman by winning silver medals in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes, totaling an impressive 18.75 points for the day. The boys’ sprinters also made a statement in the long jump, as Rashaad Mack and Deshawn Mazyck (both Juniors) placed the Wildcats as the only team to advancetwo athletes to the 8 man finals. Mack went on to win the bronze with a jump of 20’- 9”, an impressive mark for a first year man, nearly a foot and a half past his previous best. Mack also placed 6th in the 100m dash, for a total of 11.75 points. Also medaling was last week’s star, Senior pole vaulter Matt Hill who took the bronze (6 pts.). Mazyck rounded out the top scorers with 5.75 points.

Meanwhile, Coach Robert Williams’ girls ran into the juggernaut that is the Summerville Greenwave, a team that’s ranked 2nd in the state and is loaded with elite performers in each of the events our girls typically medal. Junior Nodia Robinson, the pre-season favorite to win State in the 800m, was forced to settle for the bronze medal after being out-run by two Summerville girls. There is consolation in the facts that as a basketball player Robinson is still a month behind most in her training, and neither Greenwave girl has come close to her personal record, But the wake-up call has certainly sounded for Nodia to pick up the pace. Surprisingly, the only other medalist for the girls was Freshman Morghan Blake who took the bronze in the 100 meter dash, while the girls leading scorer Sophomore Jessie Gallagher had a rare off-day and was denied a medal for the first time this season, settling for a fist full of 4th and 5th place finishes and 11.25 points. Rounding out the top scorers were Junior Amber Caparas (10.25), Blake (10), and Robinson (8.25). Distance standout Kerstin Hornung was the Wildcat girls’ lone entrant to the Cooper River Bridge run, so she was not present for the meet.

Matt Hill breaks School Record; Kerstin Hornung has Break-Out Meet

Conway, SC — March 24, 2007

Senior Matt Hill won the gold medal and posted a mark of 12 feet 7 inches in the pole vault at this Saturday’s Beach Run Invitational (Coastal Carolina University) to become the first Wildcat of the 2007 season to break a school record. The previous record was 12’6” set by Ben Burbage during the 2005 season. Hill’s feat made for an especially big day in his athletic career, as he also set a new meet record in the event, won the boys’ first gold medal of the season, and earned the first medal of his 2 year career. Hill spent most of his Junior year learning the daunting moves that comprise the pole vault, and it didn’t take long for him to fall in love with the acrobatic event. “I really wanted to do something this year, so I trained all summer and again this fall with coach [Tom] O’Rourke,” said Hill. When new vaulting coach Will Kuenzel took over this winter, he quickly built a quality program around Hill, and Head Coach Richard Luden praises his efforts. “He’s built the deepest group of athletes for any one event on the team. He’s doing a terrific job,” said Luden. The rest of the boys’ team continued to improve, but top sprinter Dana Brown had an unusually flawed day, false-starting himself out of sure medals in three of his four events. Rashaad Mack again looked strong in each of his events, especially the 4×100 relay where he and his teammates missed out on their first medal due to a dropped baton on the final leg.

For the Girls, German runner Kerstin Hurnung had the break-out day Coach Robert Williams had been expecting from his All-Region Cross Country star. Hornung improved her personal best in all three of her events, winning the gold medal in the 3200, the silver in the 1600, and another gold in the 4×800 relay. She was especially impressive in winning the 3200, as she nearly lapped the entire field, captivating the crowd in the process. Hornung scored 20.5 points to lead all scorers for the first time this season, and led the girls’ squad to a second place finish in the 15 school meet that featured mostly Myrtle Beach are teams and a couple from North Carolina. Star runner Nodia Robinson had a bit of a breakout day herself, winning a solo gold in the 800 while leading the girls to two more golds in the 4×800 and 4×400 relays. Super Sophomore Jessie Gallagher had another big day, winning silver in the high jump and the bronze in the 100 meter hurdles while joining Robinson for two golds in the two relays for an equally impressive 19 points. Despite continuing to struggle to find her stride in the 400 meter hurdles, Junior Amber Caparas managed to eek out the bronze while also sharing the two relay golds for a total of 11 points. Rounding out the Wildcat medalists was Kerris Richardson, who won a gold with the 4×400 relay and totaled 3.5 points. The gold was the first medal of Richardson’s two year career.

Rising Star Jessie Gallagher has Another Big Week

Charleston, SC — March 19, 2007

As a freshman in 2006 Jessica Gallagher finished the season second in team scoring and barely missed the State finals in two events. Just 3 weeks into the 2007 season and it appears she plans to jump to the next level in both categories. She’s already the school record holder in the high jump with a personal best of 5’2”, and her 100 meter hurdle performances are racking up points every meet, but it may be her new found strength as a relay sprinter that best proves her emergence as a true team leader. “I feel really strong right now. I think playing volleyball this year made a huge difference,” said Gallagher. While there’s no doubt becoming a two sport athlete is paying dividends, the coaches and teammates point to her sheer athletic ability and love for competition as the roots of her success. Likewise, coaches and teammates all agree that Jessie is proving herself to be the best kind of leader, as she’s dedicated to tough practices and effortlessly makes friends with everyone on both squads. Now just a sophomore, it’s exciting to know we have several years to watch Jessica’s story unfold.

Wednesday Night Lights
For the second meet in a row under the Wednesday night lights, Junior standout Amber Caparas was out of action, but this time with a stomach virus that took it’s toll all the way through the Outback Invitational this Saturday. Also missing the Wednesday meet were sprinter Sherard Bing and Shot/Discus thrower Mary-Angela Mullan. It appears the MIA’s were too much to overcome against a strong Berkeley team who forced the girls to settle for second just ahead of Goose Creek (82, 64, and 32 pts. respectively). Gallagher again led all Wildcats in scoring by winning the High Jump and the 100 Hurdles (12 total pts), Kerstin Hornung won the 1600 and the 3200 (11.25), Morghan Blake won the Long Jump (10.75), and star runner Nodia Robinson won the 800 (7 pts.).

Outback Azalea Invitational Results
At Saturday’s 21 school Outback Azalea Invitational in Summerville, the athletes battled gusting winds and harsh temperatures that hurt all athletes, but especially our Junior stars Nodia Robinson and Amber Caparas who were both battling illness. In result the two perennial medalists for the first time in their careers failed to medal at the Azalea, leaving super sophomore Jessica Gallagher as the teams’ lone medalist with a bronze in the 100 hurdles and a total of 9.5 points. Other scorers were Caparas (6.5), Robinson (4.5), Kerstin Hornung (2), and Lauren Bass (1.5). The hamstrung girls finished 10th among the 21 team field. For the still improving boys squad, sophomore Dana Brown took 5th in the 100 and 7th in the 200 for 6 points, and Pole Vaulter Matt Hill took 4th for 5 points with fellow Vaulter Nick Kaiser taking 7th for 2 pts. The boys finished 13th among 23 schools.

Wildcat Girls Track Team Rolls, Boys Improve

Charleston, SC — March 7, 2007

In the second mid-week meet under Wednesday night lights, Coach Robert Williams’ girls defeated Stratford, Battery Creek, and Colleton County (71 to 61, 66, and 32 respectively) in convincing fashion. Sophomore Jessica Gallagher continued as the team’s high scorer after winning both 100m Hurdles and the High Jump while also running victorious in the 4×400 and 4×800 relays for a 13 point outing. Gallagher also broke the 16.5 sec. mark for the first time in her young career. Led by freshman Morghan Blake who last year earned her letter as an 8th grader, the girls’ sprinters won the 4×100 relay to complete a rare sweep of relay events for the girls’ team. Blake also won the 100 and 200 meter dashes and placed 2nd in the Long Jump to lead all scorers with 15.5 points on the night.

German runner Kerstin Hornung won the 1600 and was again impressive with 9.5 points; star runner Nodia Robinson won the 800 while anchoring both long relays for 9 points; and Lauren Bass placed in 4 events for 7 points to lead the remaining team scorers. As clear evidence of their improving depth, the girls dominated without the services of Junior hurdler/runner Amber Caparas (last years’ top scorer) who due to a required academic event in Atlanta missed the first meet of her career.

Meanwhile, Coach Richard Luden’s boys improved in all phases, as star sprinter Dana Brown again shined by winning both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, and teammates Deshawn Mazyck, Richie Scott, and Rashaad Mack joined Brown to run a season’s best 3:44 in the 4×400 relay, 18 seconds faster than their previous best. Senior Captain Tyler Dawson was joined by Sophomore Ryan Mello to hit the 5:00 mark in the 1600, personal best for both runners.
